About The Academy Schools

The Academy Schools reflect a commitment to the development and education of the whole child.
This approach acknowledges that each child has unique strengths to be developed and
accommodations to be addressed.  The emphasis of our program is to enable persons with
disabilities to prepare for living and interaction in their homes and communities.

Throughout the curriculum, the emphasis is placed on developing the skills necessary for
independence in the natural home and community settings.  The Academy Schools aims at
developing  partnership and collaboration with the individual clients, families, care providers, and
community members.  Our staff will assist in the instruction for family members to understand how
to change and modify challenging behaviors, while at the same time also assisting the individual
with the disability to be more self-determining through positive pro-social behaviors at school and
in the community.

The Academy Schools objectives include:

• Providing a safe and engaging learning environment with many opportunities for
student success.
• Designing and implementing an I.E.P. tailored to each student’s unique educational need,
behavioral characteristics, and future direction.
• Setting up an environment where each student can be successful.
• Discovering and creatively developing each child’s communication talents.
• Teaching and practicing real world functional life skills.
• Developing community resources as liaisons.

Our Interdisciplinary Approach

The Academy Schools utilize an interdisciplinary approach to education and adapts to the needs
and strengths of each student.  The program is highly individualized, innovative and flexible, so that
students have every opportunity to succeed.
One-to-one as well as small group participation, during which hands-on learning techniques are
employed to assist each student in moving forward is offered at The Academy Schools.
School staff believes that students should be taught functional skills within the settings in which
skills will be demonstrated.  Home and community, in addition to the classroom setting are
appropriate environments for targeted skill instruction.  We work to improve each child’s quality of
life with the goal being to become as independent as possible.
